Is Hubble Worth the Trouble?

by

David Ritchey

For more than 15 years the Hubble Space Telescope has provided us with breath-taking views of our Universe. It has unlocked the secrets of black holes, star formation, and even discovered two new moons orbiting Pluto. And now, as astronomers begin to probe into new understandings of dark matter and dark energy, we find that Hubble is in dire need of repair. Yet, a repair mission to Hubble is a costly and dangerous undertaking.

Can we afford to repair Hubble? Can we afford not to?
